We went to the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia specifically to see the geladas and were not disappointed. Like many species in Ethiopia they allow you to get much closer to them than you could with baboons in South Africa, (you can walk amongst them) and they are not even especially curious about humans. They are much less aggressive with each other than our baboons, and their family interactions are a marvel to see. Our guide told us that if one of them farts, the others all chase him but not sure if that is true……..the colour and texture of their fur (more like hair on the older ones) and the heart shapes on their chests make them unique. I took the picture below with a tiny camera – you can see how close I was. An unforgettable experience as was all of Ethiopia.
